Did you know?
November 21st, 2008 by teethThe mouth is the gateway to your body. The mouth is an entry point for infections that can affect local tissues and than spread to the rest of the body. According to Dr. Iocapino, resent studies show that evidence is mounting which links oral health to general health. For example, the chronic inflammation which is found in periodontal disease is now being associated with additional conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cancer. While periodontal disease is not known to cause these conditions, it is safe to conclude that the treatment of periodontal disease reduces the amount of inflammation the body has to treat and improves circulation, oral health and general health.
These findings will present a breakthrough in the way oral health and systemic health are related to one another. Medical doctors and dentists will need to collaborate with each other in dealing with patient care.
